For an idea of how stringent and tech-based the cell phone tracking being used in China to monitor the virus and enforce social distancing is, check out this 1 minute vid that was posted on twitter.

The above Chinese model is very attractive to control freaks. Might be coming soon to a theater near you.

what may be some good news based on more data points.

In the report Dr. Fauci now argues that the mortality rate of the coronavirus may be much closer to a very bad flu

If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%. This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968)

rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.2

some have talked about children being susceptible

A recent review of 72,314 cases by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention showed that less than 1% of the cases were in children younger than 10 years of age.2 In order to determine the spectrum of disease in children, we evaluated children infected with SARS-CoV-2 and treated at the Wuhan Children’s Hospital, the only center assigned by the central government for treating infected children under 16 years of age in Wuhan.

Both symptomatic and asymptomatic children with known contact with persons having confirmed or suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection were evaluated. Nasopharyngeal or throat swabs were obtained for detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA by established methods.4 The clinical outcomes were monitored up to March 8, 2020.

A total of 27 patients (15.8%) did not have any symptoms of infection or radiologic features of pneumonia. A total of 12 patients had radiologic features of pneumonia but did not have any symptoms of infection. During the course of hospitalization, 3 patients required intensive care support and invasive mechanical ventilation; all had coexisting conditions (hydronephrosis, leukemia [for which the patient was receiving maintenance chemotherapy], and intussusception).

The idea is to track the virus. If you have been in a buss or in the Metro where there has been someone who has it, you will be informed about this and asked to take precautions. If I had been around people who has it, I would be very thankful to know about it.

The predictions of the models don’t match the reality on the ground on either China, South Korea, or Italy,” she said.

Birx also addressed reports that raised the alarm of New York City hospitals running out of ICU beds, ventilators, and creating “Do Not Resuscitate” (DNR) policies for patients.

She revealed that she spoke with health officials in New York, that there were still ICU beds and 1000-2000 ventilators available, and that there were no DNR policies enacted.

“We don’t have evidence of that right now,” she said.

Or, you can simply stay away from people.

I don't think Americans would be happy with any system that identifies and tracks them. China doesn't use them just because it wants to be technologically advanced. They're monitoring tools. Americans would want that as much as a national identity card that collects information on everything you buy, sell or use.

Btw, I said many Americans would be against it. Not me. Sure, people can already be monitored from their phone use. There's no law that you have to have one or use it to pay for anything. Some US states are requiring that stores offer customers the ability to pay in cash. I know it's happening in NY.

From the other covid thread

NYC will certainly survive. The best that can happen now is YES for people to understand so that it doesn't happen in cities without the same resources. Btw, the expected apex of the curve in NY will be 21 days from now. Don't let nobody bullshit you.

The population density of cities like Wuhan and Guangzhou is very similar to Manhattan, and the self-incubating virus hotspot of Wuhan required three months of the most extreme measures in order to control the spread, short of summary execution, extreme measures which were shown in various social media in December and January, but were not reported by the mainstream. However, in New York City, well after the danger of corona was known and after the ban on Chinese flights, the NYC Health Commissioner Oxiris Babot and two other reps were imploring people to mingle in Chinatown lunar new year crowds and attend parades. De Blasio was doing the same for another two or three weeks on twitter while he continued to go to the gym with his security entourage.

Their absurd actions probably lost the chance to decrease the spread at a time when doing so could have prevented the dramatic growth curve showing up now.

A five minute summary of NYC officials early mistakes.

We ("the people") and our leaders all certainly failed to respond quickly after seeing what other countries were going through.

I think places like Hong Kong and Taiwan responded incredibly quickly due to the experience with SARS. Taiwan had a fully staffed, resourced command center ready to go. We (in the USA) had no such experience to learn from.

I'm not NOT CRITICIZING any politicians of any stripe, but just saying it was harder for us to react quickly enough.

The big questions are what are we doing now and is that enough?

When I go out for a bike ride, I see that "the people" are NOT trying very hard to stay 6ft away from other people. ??? ??? ???

Back on February 1, which again is well after the extreme danger of the virus was apparent from what was happening in China, and after Russia, Mongolia, and North Korea had closed their borders to China (they have few virus cases now), the Mayor of Florence, Italy encouraged the spread of the virus by initiating a "hug a Chinese" campaign.

FYI, Italy is the only Western European country who joined China's Belt and Road initiative, which brought more Chinese tourists, more Chinese students, and over 100,000 Chinese workers, many of them from Wuhan, into North Italy, their corona epicenter. China did not prevent those migrant workers from Wuhan returning to North Italy factories and an arm of their state run media created a campaign against social distancing that guilt-tripped Italians into literally hugging random Chinese people on the street in the first week of February.

Mayor Dario Nardella's twitter from Feb. 1.

Shortened youtube clip of the same posted a few days later.

@ everything

The best protective measure is masks and we do not have them because we outsourced those, as well as medicine to China. That is part of globalization and some of its downsides are becoming more apparent now.
