I think age is definitely a factor. Life expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa writ large is only about 61 years as of 2015. So, from that perspective very little of the population lives long enough to be in the most susceptible range.

Practically speaking very little of that population is obese either, which is one of the biggest risk factors found so far.

But, it does present another series of data points. And the more of these that present the better the odds that answers can be found.

could be because Gates has a strong presence there, helping out and testing vaccines ?

Sturgis was a super spreader event. Duh...

We had the "pleasure" of driving through Sturgis during the event. It was funny to watch all the people hauling (not riding) their bikes and then stopping to hop on once they were 15 miles outside of town. Suburban cosplay at its second best.

Gates Foundation has been active dealing with a variety of diseases in Africa for quite some time.

As for COVID specifically, I don't think they've done too much with that yet in Africa as the disease is so new. So far it appears the population there is exceptionally resistant to the disease for reasons that are not understood.

Lots of data for the region such as lower median age, no Vitamin D deficiency, and very little obesity are all indicative of populations that are resistant in general. A fairly low percentage of their populations have type A blood, which is also associated with the most severe presentations of the disease as well.

And that doesn't get into any possible genetic resistance to the disease as well.

Right now it's just too early to tell, but more data is generally better in situations like this.

Well, since South Africa actually has a major Covid problem I'm not sure how useful these general observations are. It could very well be under or non reporting.

African countries have also dealt with ebola. That's one reason there were many infectious disease specialists in those areas, and the people there are less likely to pooh-pooh or reject interventions when they can. South African cases are probably better reported than some other places, but that's also a function of more testing.

It'd be better to look at the hospitalization and survival rates country by country. "Africa" is simply to big a category to make generalizations.

South Africa is one of the test areas where AstraZenica are in phase 3 of its covid19 vaccine, their testing had for the moment been halted since test person got ill in some neural infection by the vaccine.........

Who volunteers for vaccine testing ? Is there money involved, does the test subjects get payed?

we are swimming in the RNA/DNA ocean,
viruses are in fact part/s/ of our DNA chain,
so,
vaccination may be counterproductive sometimes,
adopting them - looks like better approach .
This process is natural and we are part of it all the time...

For this one I don't know, but subjects in this kind of tests usually get a small sum. Small. Obviously they have to sign papers so they cannot sue the company. But they usually try to help a subject as much as possible if there's any complication. If they die, they cannot do much obviously... :-\

Phase III, when they test human subjects, is the most critical phase and where things usually goes wrong. At least 50% of all drugs reaching this stageare either put on hold or will be completely gone. I know people who have invested in small medical companies that do tests with Covid-19 vaccines (usually phase I or II). I try to advice them not to. It's not worth the risk. They will all lose their investments, I am 100% sure of it.

Volunteers might be reimbursed for travel and receive some compensation. Anyway, iinm, the goal of the AZ vaccine trial was to see whether it generated antibodies. If a volunteer gets an unrelated illness, it makes sense to pause. It's not like testing for a cure, as in giving what's being tested to a dying patient.

Ya know. Maybe the politicians who believe a vaccine is around the corner should volunteer.

yes, but south africa was mentioned just a couple of posts before, and i just read the news that south africa is also the location(as is also somewhere in tneUS) for astrazenicas vaccine testing....if people can have bad reactions to the vaccine in the UK then the possibillity for that can happen in those other testing areas too ?.........yes volunteers volunteer, but there must be areason for doing so, especially if ones own health may be at stake...is it old people who believe they dont have many years left anyway, is it family'less people ?, or is it just out of pure humanitarian beleif of helping humanity ? or is it poor people who get some cash(does rich people test vaccinate volunteer?)?........would you be volunteering for an not fully developed vaccine ?
