Interesting talk . . . thanks for posting it, OL. Unzicker is definitely onto something with respect to the historical trends in physics. Today's theoretical physicists generate widely-scattered and often-disconnected musings in mathematics for which billions of dollars are spent chasing after elusive experimental verification . . . but in the meantime the theoreticians' wanderings and disputations have moved on. Most of the chat is theoreticians talking to themselves, irrelevant to the daily lives or welfare of humanity. Occasionally there is a short-lived headline, briefly in the very-brief attention span of the public, decades and a fortune in taxpayer dollars after the mathematical "prediction" (e.g., almost 50 years for the Higgs boson, and only after building the Large Hadron Collider).
Needless to say, this is just my opinion. Please feel free to disregard it. ;D

Imagine all these money could had done.
There is a reason why they called theoretical physics.
Old master always say, too much theory is not good for kungfu, there is a good reason for that.
