The shit Trump and others complain about seems to be due to this kind of deal the execs make wherein to gain access to the market and the suppliers/factories, you are required to set up a joint venture. The joint venture transfers IP and know how to the other companies under some kind of "laws" that don't go the way you thought. Seems like a perfect case. I'm totally against Trump's racist and 'Murica divisive rhetoric and lack of abilities/leadership, and other nations should "get rich", but I think he might be right about execs and politicians "getting a bad deal" in the past.

Is this a response?
President Donald Trump on Thursday issued an executive order that would ban the social media app TikTok and WeChat from operating in the US in 45 days if they are not sold by their Chinese-owned parent companies..

. In a major blow to Microsoft, the Chinese government will be replacing all PCs that run Windows by 2022, and could instead use a Chinese-created Linux distro, such as Kylin Linux.

The order comes from the Chinese Communist Party Central Office, and is part of a drive to replace any computer that runs non-Chinese software, partly in response to the US

Has been in the works for years, done for the same rationale that the US is banning apps from China.
The big difference is that the Chinese gov. directly controls their own software. The US government continues to rely on private industry.

While it may cause some disruption, it will also help to break up certain monopolies that have formed allowing new companies and start up companies to have a chance at the market.

Microsoft has in the past tried to hold on to its Chinese customer base by offering a Chinese Government Edition of Windows 10 back in 2017, but that doesn't appear to have been enough. Instead, the Chinese government will switch to a Chinese-developed operating system, and Linux could be the natural choice.

Microsoft facing the same choices as tick-tock and WeChat made a separate windows edition for China according to government regulations. With the exception of Google and some other apps many US companies have separate platforms for the Chinese following their government regulations.

it seems ironic that orders from trump could directly benefit facebook (owner of instagram)

on the more general topic, this story reminds me of the industrial policy debates when the US thought it would lose everything to Japan, but the pro-free-trade/low government argument bolsters outsourcing/offshoring, comparative advantage, etc.

then a supposed conservative who should be for that free trade argument is actually more protectionist. which i don't necessarily disagree with at the philosohical level. but if that's the case the industrial policy/private/public cooperation/investment should be A LOT more strategic and targeted (e.g., toward clean energy), and not knee jerk weird reactions to "data concerns" about stupid memes' usage. total fucking lack of intelligence.

The spying concerns are probably legitimate. But, data mining by a "US" owned company doesn't seem to solve the problem. It sure isn't breaking up any monopolies.

I don't Tweet, Insta, Snap, or TikTok, so it means nothing to me. I watch the funny TikTok videos on YouTube.

I look at it as a response to a million tik tok'ers in Korea spoofing tickets for his campaign rally

i haven't read what the "spying" does? knows what stupid memes some users like?

doesn't sound like much of an "intelligence" matter with actual spies and state secrets and so on

the idea that trump is concerned about social media companies having user "data" when he's the biggest twitter user is kind of funny

Ya know, if that hadn't happened, I might be persuaded that there was some national security issue. The event was an embarrassment, and may even have cost Herman Cain his life. But, believing that a million people wanted to attend was ... overly optimistic.

I wouldn't be surprised that an underlying reason is that he's not making anything from TikTok. Apparently, he wants whichever US company that buys it will kick back a finder's fee to the Treasury, too. Well, his company is trying to trademark "telerally." and following the money almost always leads to the motives and who has them.
