正氣堂集 Collection of Righteousness by General Yu

Postby Overlord on Sun Aug 01, 2021 1:57 pm

General Yu was famous military combatants in General Qi period, adding credit to his teaching, both practical and effective.
It’s a very interesting piece of writing I noticed years ago.
In General Yu’s writing many things are worthy of study
1, It’s link with Liuhebafa
2, It’s link with Xinyi
3, It’s link with Zen
4, It’s link with Jing Chu sword 荊楚長劍

So half of the focus is on the mind and enlightening 知慧覺照. While half is on the swordsmanship 劍訣禪戒.

I sincerely hope this topic does not irritate some and ban this topic. It’s not evangelical ( non biblical ).
But bad things do happen.

Are you talking about Yu Fei?
I could be wrong.

Yu Dayou. 俞大猷
The Ming dynasty was probably one of militant strong dynasty particularly in navy forces.

This is why I think the Budidharma’s Blood and Pulse Treatise posted by Strange is of significance.
Like he said, he won’t post things that are useless. Unfortunately it’s banned by forum on the ground of “evangelicalism”. What ever that means. But each is to their opinions. Those with power will try to silence what they are afraid to hear. It happened many times in history.

In Liuhebafa five word treatise, a lot Zen and Daoist jargons are used. Why?
Words like 元通(圓通),心意,無法, 圓覺,虛無,無為,無象,無意。
I believe the early sage view the forms as merely a vehicle, aiming high other than what we can perceive in mundane and turbid world.

Thanks Andy,
strangely your post reminded me of a Zen koan:
"what is your face before this one that is given to you?"

interestingly, Shakespeare wrote something similiar:
"God has given you one face; but you yourself another."

With just one face, I have already a multitude of illusions
I shudder to think about having two :)

cheers and keep safe

I wish there is a translation of some of Chinese MA classic, having say that it’s impossible to get the meaning across.
If I want to learn making pasta, I will always try to learn some Italian to know how to do it, depending on the depth and how good I want to be, and that is the minimum humility required. Of course it’s alway easy to do Mac Dojo with Pizza Hut, it does work to fill you up.

If you compare cooking knowledge to internal ability, You should know, that proper cooking direction is all what you need to know.
Rest is in experience.
Translation problems?
Well, even natives has different interpretation of ancients texts.
You have to grasp something behind the words, make note, that The Author used words/symbols/ in his own meaning (in given period), and this is his own interpretation.
So
My opinion in this matter :
Better to have not quite good translation as a base for discussion, than unreadable characters.
Here we have some members versed in reading Chinese characters, then why not to start from translation interpretations, as 1st step?
This is the way to open the door, not to close with nose up.

Wiesiek,
i appreciate you sharing your opinion on the matter
for me unreadable characters need not be in a different language
for example, words like "expectancy", "instrumentality", and "valence"
without studying the subject, i doubt lay person would understand the meaning these words are trying to convey.
I am not making this up; they are the 3 factors that make up Vroom's Expectancy Theory.

When i asked my Prof at that time, why do "they" use such obscure words
her ans was that "we" try to make sure that ppl study these words before they can use them

as for good translation, what does the translated word for "合", which is "harmony", actually mean?
or more accurately is it in any way, shape, or form, instructive to the practitioner?
come now, we are not children running around in a playground.

maybe you will not agree with me, it is ok; importantly there is an exchange and so
it is a good beginning.
But to shut others down, if you do not agree with them
This is simply un-American

Yes, meanings of the words may be different, not only in different periods of the history, even different "social circles" from the same period, tends to forms kind of"secret," or "professional" language.
With Taoist texts, we have cake with recipe, written in >alchemical< language from the very beginning.
This opens a field for interpretations.
Hopefully heart of the matter is in practice.
Now, you can say _ proper practice is the key.
Ok, I agree, my opinion here is- we have well known, solid base of internal training to begun with.
You practicing you`re experiencing.
`cause internal "feeling" of the experience may differ from person to person, and you are using "alchemical" language to describe it, you`re getting unreadable (with understanding) text, for not practicing part of the crowd.
and now,
If you post characters, unreadable for part of the RSF posters , you`re simply putting border with covid passport control.
That`s all
best
W.
