beef consumption threatening rainforest

The cows grazed under the midday Amazon sun, near a wooden bridge spanning a river. It was an idyllic scene of pastoral quiet, occasionally broken by a motorbike growling on the dirt road that cuts through part of the Lagoa do Triunfo cattle farm to a nearby community.

But this pasture is land that the farm has been forbidden to use for cattle since 2010, when it was embargoed by Brazil’s government environment agency Ibama for illegal deforestation. Nearby were more signs of fresh pasture: short grass, feeding troughs, and salt for cattle.

The vast 145,000-hectare (358,302-acre) farm is one of several owned by the company AgroSB Agropecuária SA – known in the region as Santa Bárbara. Located in an environmentally protected area, Lagoa do Triunfo is more than 600km (372 miles) from the capital of the Amazon state of Pará on the western fringes of Brazil’s “agricultural frontier” – where farming eats into the rainforest.

I read the thread title as “beer consumption threatens rainforest” and went, ‘Wait, what?!” 8-)

It’s been happening for decades. I wrote my college thesis about it. You can thank McDonald’s, among other entities.

Beer consumption? No-o-o. May as well all just give up now and move to Mars.

I was talking to a friend's uncle who is originally from India. He gave me a long lecture about how it's not that cows are sacred, but people want to eat hamburgers, and then look at the heart disease that results ... if he knew about the rainforest, I don't know what he would've told me. It's very sad. I really did used to love beef. I eat little beef nowadays, but I guess reduced consumption isn't enough... ??? :-X

It is not beef consumption but burning down of the forest (Amazon) resulting in flooding, soil deterioration, the movement of indigenous people of the forest who have lost their land meaning no animals, fist, etc to hunt, leading to destruction of the natural habitat. The loss of the Amazon (so far) has lead to extreme flooding where when the trees are gone, soil unable to absorb water, erosion and the maladjustive mindset of people like Bolsonaro who sees the illegal loggers as heroes and blind to the ecological disasters that goes with babitat destruction. It is sad becuae the indigebnous flock to the urban areas without the tools to make a living and they add to the homelessness, drug addiction, that is part of the urban shanty town towns (favelas) that exacerbates poverty!

Should we tell the muslims to start eating pork instead?

"We" can suggest and encourage that everyone at least eat less meat. As far as I understand (don't have time to quote sources right now, but shouldn't be a problem), eating moderate portions of (red) meat 2 or 3 times a week is enough to provide the various nutrients that are provided particularly easily by meat. Everything else can usually be provided through eggs, dairy and vegetable products, and in most cases no meat but dairy is fine, and often eggs and dairy aren't really necessary either. Or only in smaller quantities. And besides this, putting meat from mammals and birds on the plate is an extremely inefficient way of converting sunlight into (the full range of) nutrients for humans.

Well, yes, but what's the relevance here? However chimpanzees pic'n'mix their diet, it doesn't lead to them destroying the jungle they live in.

humans win the award for smartest and dumbest primate. capable of traveling to the moon or destroying the planet. ah, you lowly chimpanzees. take that.

Species tend to do what's in their best interest regardless of the environment they live in.
In most cases the environment or other species. the limiting factor to their dominance , limiting what some species can do in their best interest.

With human societies, war seems to work as the limiting factor....

Something it seems to work on most of the time.... :P

Have chimps overrun the planet and become the primary agents of change on the planetary systems? Humans move more earth than rivers do. Chimps also don't put holes in the Ozone or change the climate in any significant way.

To take the braindead argument further: animal sexual relations often if not mostly involve what we would classify rape. So, is that fine?

Finally, while the "whataboutism' commonly used by conservative-minded people, it's simply an obviously fallacious stance that can't possibly be taken seriously.
