Thoughts and Prayers

Postby origami_itto on Thu May 26, 2022 2:08 am

They say thoughts and prayers but really are there either involved? Thoughts? What are you thinking about? Thinking about how if the kids were all armed they could have stopped him sooner? Thinking about who's behind the glittery banana mask on that stupid singing show?

What the fuck are they thinking about?

Are they thinking about why we feel like we need all these guns? Somebody told me they were to protect against the roving criminal gangs terrorizing the innocent. He couldn't tell me which gangs he was talking about though.

Because they're freedom. Gun mean free. Gun make free. Die pistole macht frei.

Because communities are shattered. Families are destroyed. Yes tragedy is an unavoidable part of life but is there really nothing we could do as a society to stop asking parents to send their children to school not knowing if they're going to make it home because we insist we need high speed, anatomy destroying ammunition in high capacity magazines that we can fire as fast as we can pull the trigger just in case the government decides to give us healthcare. Fucking socialists.

I'm angry and I'm hurt and it isn't even directly about the tragedy, it's about the disappointment.

This happens and all we talk about is not restricting are freedumbs. Great. We must guard our liberty.

But let's figure out what we can do, other than kindergartners keeping Glocks in their cubby with target practice after lunch.

Because rights come hand in hand with responsibilities, and I'll lay my own life on the line in the name of defending human dignity and self determination without question. But I'm done letting children take those bullets for me. I can't ask another parent to just accept sacrificing their child as the cost of essential liberty.

At least not until they're old enough to vote, isn't that the standard?

I don't know what to do, but I know what not to do, and that's to keep accepting the thought ending responses to questions about how to reduce this violence.

How can we, as ostensibly the most intelligent life form in the universe, do better?

Thoughts and prayers are useless to dead children.

I don't know any answers, so here are some random thoughts
* sign petition from the sandy hook promise. donate
* some congressional reps are "owned" by the NRA
* it doesn't seem to help, but that means "the people" have to write letters, vote, find other ways to put pressure on those reps since they're just going for the money/power, whatever they're getting from lobbyists
* edit: draft some letters that everyone you know / those of us you don't know can re-use to send to our specific reps/senators

In Texas to do hair and nails, legally, you need an "esthetician/manicurist" license. To earn this license, you need to complete 1,200 hours of esthetician/manicurist education or 750 hours of esthetician and 600 hours of manicurist instruction.

To get an AR-15 in Texas that fires 45 rounds a minute, and a thousand rounds of ammunition? All you need is about $1,500 (although they start lower) and proof that you are over 18 years old. Period. That's it..

You don't need pretty nails to be free, Graham. You can just shoot the dirt out.

Thanks for posting that, Vadaga. Even when you know change won't come, it's still better to speak than be silent. And King says it well.

You do understand the difference between cutting hair as a profession and handling a weapon for oneself.

Of course there is always the military

Snipers must graduate from the US Army Sniper Course, a seven-week training course at Fort Benning.
Students master several different weapons systems and learn a wide array of fieldcraft skills

That's a good point, a lever action repeating rifle with a limited ammo capacity that needs to be reloaded a cartridge at a time is exactly the same thing as a semi-automatic with interchangeable magazines.

While you can theoretically fire 95 rpm with the winchester, you're going to have to stop every six rounds to reload so that might cut into your body count a bit.

Condolences to the families who lost love ones

The guy who did it, a tortured soul, if there is a hell,,,hope he finds it...

Just mentioned because of the AR-15 ect....
all weapons will, can and do kill...What there'er designed for.

There are other rifles magazine loaded, that also have a high rate of fire.

lever action, rate of fire can be pretty quick...

Rate of fire has little to do with it IMO; it's nearly *all* about the intent (of course, some minimal reasonable availability of the means is presumed). When there's intent, one will find a way -- buy a gun, build a bomb, drive a truck into a crowd, use poison, etc.
When there's no intent, you can have all the deadliest weapons in the world at your disposal, and be as safe (to your surroundings) as a cucumber.

Definitely need to require extensive training and a serious psych evaluation before purchase (let alone background checks -- an absolutely minimal requirement, which is thankfully already in place in most states).

Anyway...

Which never seems to affect those who use them....like the ones who killed an uncle of mine a couple yrs back....

Still awaiting trial

"don't. say anything bad about the ones who just killed your family member.
Wouldn't want the public to be sympathetic to them".

ya ok...
