Taiwan is a sovereign nation BUT it is impossible to hold on to the construct that they are the true "inheritors" "rulers" of mainland China because they will lose on that alone, if they persist in that rhetoric
The PLA have been in control for over x? years and clearly they control the hearts and minds of their own intimate space, which is the mainland.

I applaud Pelosi for making the trip because the mainland has never understood what freedom is about and they should thank Richard Nixon and the good ole' USA for throwing wages, industry and frammework for the buildinbg of New China Inc.
USA was talking from both sides of their mouth when on one hand, they attempted to embarrass the Communist direction by siding with Taiwan while using the mainland to undermine the "Blue Collar industry" through Richard Nixon an dhis cohorts.

Not a fan of Pelosi, and her drunk driving husband, but I have to give her credit for making the trip.

She did a good thing.

But Sens. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) aren’t satisfied with the status quo.

The pair recently introduced a bill, known as the Taiwan Policy Act of 2022, that they touted as

“the most comprehensive restructuring of U.S. policy towards Taiwan”

since 1979. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which Menendez chairs, is set to take up the proposal on Wednesday.

Some of the bill’s most notable changes to U.S. policy include increasing military support for Taiwan, expanding Taipei’s role in international organizations, and laying out a harsh package of sanctions to be applied if Beijing engages in any “significant escalation in hostile action” toward the island.

Autonomous right ?

It's a win/win. The US shows it still supports Taiwan, and the PRC has the opportunity to have military games or maneuvers around the region to demonstrate its power -and that it could always attack Taiwan.

No idea why Pelosi went, but all it shows is support. If she can be stopped from visiting, then what about the weapons that are sent? So, yeah, it's provocative. But, if a politician can go to N or S Korea, Saudi Arabia or Israel, Russia or Ukraine, the reason why one can't go to Taiwan is unclear. I get why the Xi doesn't like it.

They have their own views quite complex in nature..

What ever happens will be something they work out, don't see how the visit by the 3rd inline
to the US Presidency helps the situation considering it was the US who agreed to the one China policy

China is watching.....the fire starter at work... :-\

During the March 23-24 meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) council, Anthony Blinken, the U.S. secretary of state, encouraged NATO members to join the U.S. in viewing China as an economic and security threat to the U.S. as well as to NATO countries, thereby expanding NATO’s areas of focus to include the Pacific.
This is a dangerous move that must be challenged.

Imo, the PRC doesn't need to take over Taiwan at all. It could, but doesn't have to. Afa people in the US considering China a threat, they're right; but, China has 1/4 of the world's population. Aw, just take a look at the labels in Walmart clothes, hardware, tools, etc. We are China's biggest consumer. Labor is cheaper there, and tech is tech. They can copy or reverse engineer Japanese or S.Korean electronics. China's economy will eventually be larger than ours. There's no way to stop that from happening.

I think Xi is smart enough to know that we're a big rice bowl. Otoh, it's not altogether different from the Russia/Ukraine situation: i.e., the search to renew traditional empires. The problem with Taiwan is that many don't think the PRC is legitimate. My Taiwanese teachers used to say the gov't was communist, not Chinese. Younger people might not have those feelings.

The One China principle is the position held by the People's Republic of China (PRC) that there is only one sovereign state under the name China, with the PRC serving as the sole legitimate government of that China, and Taiwan is a part of China.[

Why would China, need to take over Taiwan...under one China policy there is only "One China " Taiwan is part of it...

Lived in China, resident of Taiwan...
of those I interact with , relatives, friends , some of my students
from China/Taiwan living in the US, some in Taiwan.

Its a complex subject, much more then just about a "rice bowl"

With out the semiconductor industry there, wonder if the US would have any interest in it...why would it,,,

Soon the the dollar as the worlds reserve currency will end.....
a large part of the control the US uses to exert its control
on other nations.

Change is gonna come :-\

Well, I don't see why the PRC takes issue with Pelosi's visit, if everything about it is settled. I think I just said that the PRC doesn't need to invade Taiwan. My suggestion was that, if Taiwan complains, the first thing to happen would be limitations on Chinese products. The fact we depend on so much PRC produced clothing is to our disadvantage. But, losing us as a market would hurt the PRC economically.

Anyway, China is 3x bigger than the US, and should have an economy 2x as large eventually. I don't think that's a bad thing, either.

From the designated PLA military drills area, the operations could pose a threat to major ports and shipping lanes in Taiwan, forming a complete blockage. This blockage style could be one of the action plans taken in the future for achieving the reunification by force, Herman Shuai, a retired Taiwan lieutenant general, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

Two northern exercise areas designated by the PLA are located off the coast of Keelung Port and Taipei Port, the central exercise area is located off the Taichung Port, the southern exercise area is located off the Kaohsiung Port and the eastern one is located off the Hualien Port. The exercise areas are a "template" for "locking down Taiwan," Shuai said. "If the PLA exercises take a long time, it will constitute a substantial blockage of Taiwan."

Hope the military "exercises" are over soon....
Of course they might take awhile,,,armies need to train... :-\

Fire starter so far not affected by the fire they start

An official from the presidential office told the South China Morning Post Yoon would not be greeting the high-profile US visitor, whose stature as a powerful Democratic leader and second in the line of succession infuriated Beijing and caused a diplomatic row.

Sure, Xi is saving face by flexing his muscles. Let's see whether he decides to invade, or ban exports to the US.
Just a guess, but I think it's more likely that he'll encourage Kim to be a pita.

Taiwan's ace in the hole,,,TSMC

Image

The project is under construction on 1,129 acres of land near Interstate 17 and Loop 303 that TSMC purchased in December 2020. According to company representatives, the construction is on schedule to be operational in 2024.

The project represents the largest foreign direct investment in Arizona's history.Jun

Hard to believe it will be operational in 2024.

Looks like Taiwan's time line for usefulness is running out.... :-\
