Dutch students have invented a zero-emissions car that captures carbon as it drives.

"This car was made with the goal to minimise the CO2 emitted during the manufacturing phase, the life phase and the end-of-life phase," says Jens Lahaije, a member of the Eindhoven University of Technology team who created the vehicle.

Made mostly from 3D-printed recycled plastics, the sporty all-electric car is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack.

Although EVs emit virtually no CO2 compared with their combustion-engine counterparts, battery cell production is highly polluting. As a result,it can take EVs tens of thousands of kilometres to achieve 'carbon parity' with comparable fossil-fuelled models.

The carbon capture is great. I'd still say the problem is still the use of lithium. This is an alternative with advantages -maybe too many.

too many?

another set of issues is found with the "rare earth" elements. it's not really clear to me if it's mainly a political procurement issue or also an environmental and sustainability issue.

There are too many economic and political issues; the technology exists. The question is who gets to benefit from and control it. It's relatively easy to start from "what's the least damaging to the environment for the future."

The whole electric thing is a bit of a bust until we can produce electricity without relying on burning fossil fuels surely
Nuclear would seem to be the way to go I'd have thought, as at the moment we rely on gas and oil mainly to produce the electricity we need.
France does it pretty well, but here in the UK we're still messing about with wind farms and talking about fracking.

Well, there's no way to produce electricity without using fossil fuel to manufacture the materials needed to produce it. However, that's also true for gas powered vehicles. Nuclear is always valid, but it takes fossil fuels to build them too. It would also take an equal or greater changes in infrastructure to make nuclear autos practical. Small thorium reactors are possible, but aren't cheap.

Imo, using fossil fuels to manufacture machines that don't depend on fossil fuels is better than using fossil fuels to manufacture machines that use fossil fuels.

I guess it’s a less harm in the overall cycle argument

The carbon capture while driving is cool

CO2 isn`t so harmful as the rumor carries,
CH4 (methane) is much worse
but
it can be collected and used - remember "Mad Max" with Tina? :)
I heard about pigs farms in Germany, where they using this method.
Fact is, that we have all "green technology" available already - problems?
as always - human nature and business over all.
Everything - couple threads ago you mention about electricity production from movin` of oceans waves, well I heard about such project like 30 year ago...

I remember a teenager won one of the big science projects here for inventing a buoy to collect energy. Seems like the practicality is difficult
