Several robotics companies, including Boston Dynamics, are pledging not to support the weaponization of their products and are calling for others in the industry to do the same, according to a letter shared first with Axios.
Why it matters: Robots, like drones before them, have a wide range of peaceful and even life-saving uses, but can be turned into war-fighting machines, too.
Details: The open letter highlights the erosion of consumer trust in robots as among the reasons not to allow them to be used as weapons.
"We believe that adding weapons to robots that are remotely or autonomously operated, widely available to the public, and capable of navigating to previously inaccessible locations where people live and work, raises new risks of harm and serious ethical issues," the companies said in the letter.

I only watched the middle, but it's like a sci-fi movie turned real.

Have a friend who teaches Robotics in Hsinchu, Taiwan...the tech is quite interesting In semiconductor fabs most of the processes handing wafers were automated after moving to 300mm wafers... humans unable to handle them directly...

Boston Dynamics videos are carefully curated marketing materials. Bosstown Dynamics videos are outright fakes. Look at all the trouble they've had with self-driving cars. We are a long, long ways away from having viable autonomous fighting robots (which would be infinitely more complex than a self-driving car).

The title is about "doublespeak" to the extent that the definition of a robot can and will be changed to meet the circumstance(s) of actually weaponzing robots. As an example, a drone is usually characterized as a flying object, which as we see has all the tools that are weaponized to destroy targets today i.e. Afghanistan, Iraq, etc and it is in use.
A robot can be and will defined as is but it will be called a drone to satisfy its use as a tool of war against nations. Better yet, imagine your current online experience (BSOD) though it happens less today (I think) but think about the disaster when these drones go haywire (anyone read about Tesla's (the few) that just didn't obey their cammands and in a few cases 2 people were killed and a few injured). Imagine a hacker in control a database where robot (drone) nesting station is dispatched and a domestic or local hack gains control of those robots/drone!

Aw, c'mon, Boston Dynamics doesn't have to weaponize their drones. Autonomous killing machines are a long way in the future. There are already remote control "drones" for air and sea. There are remotely controlled drones for working with mines and other explosive devices.

that cat is already way out of the bag, but I would say that the running drones are probably not as likely to get as many applications as the flying ones.
it is well within the realm of any slightly imaginative layman to think that they could for example place a small amount of incendiary or other material on a cheap consumer-grade quadcopter drone and then either drop it out of the sky on something or land it somewhere and detonate it etc. etc. etc., in fact I am surprised this hasnt happened more often... making such a device automated would be quite dangerous

I don't know if by "robot", they mean autonomous, self-driving, self-deciding robot. Or if they mean semi-automated machine that can walk around like a human and carry and operate other things like a human. Or something in between. Or some continuum .... all the way to a Terminator model.
