There are already many complaints from students that teachers have an AI flagging a false positive on their legitimate work.

What Steve said about in class handwritten work (despite the cursive issue) May be the most fair solution.

That is definitely a huge concern. I'm fairly certain that at some point in the near-enough future an AI-generated output will be completely indistinguishable from that of a real human.

Just means we're going to have to work harder to connect with our audience.

I guess their stance changed quickly

https://stackoverflow.co/company/press/ ... artnership

OpenAI and Stack Overflow are coming together via OverflowAPI access to provide OpenAI users and customers with the accurate and vetted data foundation that AI tools need to quickly find a solution to a problem so that technologists can stay focused on priority tasks. OpenAI will also surface validated technical knowledge from Stack Overflow directly into ChatGPT, giving users easy access to trusted, attributed, accurate, and highly technical knowledge and code backed by the millions of developers that have contributed to the Stack Overflow platform for 15 years. As part of this collaboration:

OpenAI will utilize Stack Overflow’s OverflowAPI product and collaborate with Stack Overflow to improve model performance for developers who use their products. This integration will help OpenAI improve its AI models using enhanced content and feedback from the Stack Overflow community and provide attribution to the Stack Overflow community within ChatGPT to foster deeper engagement with content.
Stack Overflow will utilize OpenAI models as part of their development of OverflowAI and work with OpenAI to leverage insights from internal testing to maximize the performance of OpenAI models. OpenAI’s partnership with Stack Overflow will help further drive its mission to empower the world to develop technology through collective knowledge, as Stack Overflow will be able to create better products that benefit the Stack Exchange community’s health, growth, and engagement.
“Learning from as many languages, cultures, subjects, and industries as possible ensures that our models can serve everyone. The developer community is particularly important to both of us. Our deep partnership with Stack Overflow will help us enhance the user and developer experience on both our platforms,” said Brad Lightcap, COO at OpenAI.

Be interesting to see how this decision plays out.

They probably realized that it's impossible trying to ban it.

it's a bit hard for me to follow the overly verbose press release. it sounds like:
- openAI can ingest the examples via stack overflow API and then use in chatGPT chats
- stack overflow user interface will have some examples from chatGPT? <--- doesn't seem very clear that's what they mean.

in any case, that seems like "the future will happen" no matter what.

One of my early web projects, circa 1997, was an online community called The Agora. I developed a simplified tech framework for Thunderbird School of International Management students to explore high level issues of IT and social connections, culture etc. These accomplished grad students, with one exception, couldn't see much beyond the technical challenges of hypertext. :) During the short time together I worked to present issues of authenticity, trust and identity as central to the 'problem' of online community. :) Anyway, little progress has been made in this arena in the decades since. As long as someone else, not you, controls your online identity, any work you produce is at risk. I enforce copyright whenever appropriate, but I can't enforce it when my protections embedded in the files are ignored. Machine Learning, which is what current AI is being called, is really dumb, yet can appear smart. It's useful and is not going away, but without intellectual property protections it will cause harm. If you know artists, ask them about their work and ChatGPT.

especially strange when you can have your own AI digital clone. here's Reid Hoffman talking to his "AI clone"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgD2gmwCS10

it's pretty hilarious and good fun, but what happens when everyone can have a "clone" or make a "clone" of anyone else (in probably a few weeks in the future)

another open source weighs in on Machine Learning and code commits. https://www.netbsd.org/developers/commit-guidelines.html relevant bit:
Do not commit tainted code to the repository.

If you commit code that was not written by yourself, double check that the license on that code permits import into the NetBSD source repository, and permits free distribution. Check with the author(s) of the code, make sure that they were the sole author of the code and verify with them that they did not copy any other code.

Code generated by a large language model or similar technology, such as GitHub/Microsoft's Copilot, OpenAI's ChatGPT, or Facebook/Meta's Code Llama, is presumed to be tainted code, and must not be committed without prior written approval by core.
