Grappling Dummy

Postby Darthwing Teorist on Wed Jun 11, 2008 9:48 am

This is from CaliG's post on the Time to Leave thread:

You have also helped me design my own grappling dummy. I had a previous grappling dummy that fell apart and then I had wanted to get one like you had but I did't have the money so I designed one that's not heavy but as a result allows me to focus on speed just as you said on the kettlebell thread.

My new grappling dummy is made from an old boxing bag with a heavy medicine ball as the base, stuffing for the rest and a judo gi jacket on it wrapped up in bungee chords. It's works wonderfully, I can focus on speed and besides I've found when throws I prefer (usually sweeps) are done right the opponent doesn't feel heavy anyway. (Maybe next year I'll get a dummy like yours.)

How is Mr Wang's grappling dummy made? I am asking this for a friend who may be interested in a cheap, homemade dummy.

for throws and tackle tosses, I use a 100 lb everlast bag.

basically unchain it, squat it, toss it, flip it, throw it to each other etc.

It works good for developing strength around lifting awkward shapes.

works good.
Coconuts. Bananas. Mangos. Rice. Beans. Water. It's good.

Thanks, we also used one of these. I used it for practicing transitions between various positions. I will tell him about all these options.

This is the one JW uses.

There are a few websites which teach you how to make your own.

Ideally I think a light one and a heavy one are the way to go. One for speed and one for strength.

For me 70 lbs. legged red one (which is out of stock) should do the trick, since as I was saying when you pull off a good throw you don't really feel their weight on you that much anyway and if you do you should change to another throw. Also most other grappling dummies max out at 60 lbs. This way people can train more and longer rather than tire out after 10 minutes.

Then again for wrestling type takedowns I'd probably go heavier.

Just my 2 cents.

If you go through the archives of the other board JW was talking about his grappling dummy sometime around December/January if I recall. Good stuff.

Title has a new dummy made of synthetic leather. They look sturdier than the Combat Sports version and if it's good synthetic leather the body should bend a little which would be perfect for working on throws.

Check it out and someone tell JW.

The clip where JW is repeatedly dumping his grappling dummy on its head from a fireman's carry is both hilarious and awesome. Anyone know where I can find that clip?

Thanks! I think that I will send my friend this thread.

What was John Wang's idea about the dummy?

His idea was everyone should have one.

He said he was doing a 1000 throws a day on it.

You can't do that with a partner. ;)
