Several possibilities:

1. The bear had an epiphany and understood that dogs and bears are two branches of the same ancestral line. (Thus, play.)
2. The dog had managed to communicate the desire to play to the bear, which the (hungry) bear accepted.
3. The (hungry) bear was trying to show the dog his benign intentions (hoping to share his food).

re: 1: polar bears, especially males, are cannibals.

But, possibility 4: The bear and the dog grew up together (?)

Years ago I've watched a documentary that showed a place where polar bears and dogs got along well. They didn't know why it was like this at this particular location, but they emphasized the fact that in other places polar bears would usually kill dogs.

Bears these days live in closer and closer proximity to humans and therefore their dogs.

Dogs and Bears are similar but not exactly same.

so, if a polar bear becomes a little tame from continued encounters with non aggressive humans, he will behave in that way. There are many bears that are like this up in a place called Churchill Manitoba in Canada which is a primary shipping port on Hudsons bay and gateway to the northwest passage.

they have in a sense become a nuisance. :)

p.s use "Churchill Polar Bears" as a search term and check out what may be a good vacation idea for yourself! The tundrabuggy is awesome!

(Regarding #2 and #3, these were the two reasons that the dog's owner (who watched the entire week-long spectacle (the bear came back every day to play some more) thought of himself. It's on the Net somewhere... (The bear was wild.))
