Right, Monk is not the same as Morton or Waller. However, I could talk about the progression of "jazz" as an art form, and still distinguish it clearly from "Dixie land", which was what wasn't even the first style to be called "jazz." It was a poor analogy on my part, but bebop, for ex., is a very specific form of jazz. "New jack swing" is part of the hip hop tradition, for ex., but I would call it "lite."
Put it like this, for me "hip hop" has/had a purpose, a function and a message. "In da Club" is just a way to make money. When the haters talk about all the violence and bitch/ho calling, they're right. "Hip hop" was never about that. Otoh, look at the "beef" between Ice-T and Souljah Boy (whom Ice-T says is "killin hip hop" --which is what some people said about him
)
Hey, I have nothing against the stuff that came from other communities. Ya got ATL and crunk, etc.. The South has its own still. Look at eminem from Detroit. Don't forget the old "Tennessee, Tennessee." And, the West Coast changed the whole game.
