It does seem odd that the Russians needed to surround military bases in the Crimea. Granted, at one time, it was part of an old empire. Granted, 80% of the people in the Ukraine speak Russian and are closely related to Russian people. But, if they were exactly the same people, why the need for the military? Why the ultimatum there? Why the warning shots?

Otoh, put troops in a place they're not wanted and it's almost guaranteed that sooner or later there will be shots coming from somewhere or someone.

I hear China's backing Russia on the use of force in the Ukraine, nothing more needs to be said.

Re: Russians in Crimea, there was a coalition of the pro-Russian parties including the Russian Unity party. Last year they received about 4% of the votes. I think pro Russian sentiment has been over blown.

No kidding. The guy firing the warning shots looked like he was ready to start a war. Thank goodness the officer or whoever the guy was kept his cool.

It boils to U.S. interests despite what idiots on the Left and those on the right like McCain and Grahm and FoxNewz state.

For instance when Hungary was invaded the U.S. did nothing, when Afghanistan was invaded we did nothing but squeal like a stuck pig. When Putin kicked the ass of that tie eating maniac we installed in Georgia, Bush did nothing.

Obama is wisely not doing much of anything except trying to play peacemaker which is smart.

The fact is if we do push Putin into a corner(we could if we really wanted to send the U.S. into a depression) all he has to do is cut off NatGas to Europe which would tank their economies and by extension probably take ours with it in the process.

And Crimea? Putin hasn't done much of anything, by treaty they are allowed some 25,000 troops there - besides we knew 2 weeks ago that Putin was shuffling troops around that region so it came to no surprise except our idiotic news media.

I notice the GOP is making the Hitler comparisons, sure sign that our government is beating the drums of war.

Well, Hillary apparently said something similar. Otoh, in a news conference, Putin said that there weren't any Russian troops in the Crimea. Rather, the people surrounding the military bases are security forces. (For ex., they're not wearing Russian insignias. Thus, Putin says that he's not breaching international law).

Yet the license plates on the trucks are Russian.

Then again we are the country that changed the definition of torture. So we don't have much to stand on. But going in would be the worst decision of all.

'Russia Today' Anchor Quits On Air Over Putin 'Whitewash'

An anchor with the Russia-sponsored U.S. network RT — or "Russia Today" — dramatically quit on the air Wednesday afternoon, saying the Kremlin-funded television network "whitewashes" the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Liz Wahl, who works out of the network's Washington, D.C. offices, began her televised resignation by referencing co-worker Abby Martin, who made headlines by denouncing Russian intervention in Ukraine earlier this week.

"Indeed as a reporter on this network I face many moral and ethical challenges," Wahl said.

She said that her grandparents came to the United States during the Hungarian Revolution to escape Soviet forces, and she feels lucky to have grown up in America.

"I'm the daughter of a veteran," she continued. "My partner is a physician at a military base where he sees every day the first-hand accounts of the ultimate prices that people pay for this country.

"That is why personally I cannot be part of [a] network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin," she said.

"I'm proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth. And that is why after this newscast I am resigning."

What's interesting now is that there's supposed to be a referendum on whether Crimea should secede from Ukraine. Interesting because, on one hand, if it's argued that the secession is constitutional, that means that it's conceded that Crimea is part of the Ukraine. Otoh, the question is now whether this means that Putin will leave the Ukraine alone to go its own way; or, will there be some type of conflict after the referendum that would give Russia a reason to invade in order to protect the sovereignty of the Crimea.

Afa the idea of a referendum in general, the question is whether there will be more problems if the results come out 90/10 or 51/49.

That is pretty funny.

I'm just glad Bush and Cheney are out of office because they would respond to Putin by invading Iran.
