man i love that peng. great teaching method. exactly what is meant when people say that many techniques are contained in the taiji postures.

well...
it certainly doesn't look like "orthodox" taiji (whatever that means :) ), but one can certainly see the whole body movement.
i like it.

here's an interesting clip which helps clarify what he's doing:

just like with the "peng" in the first clip, the point seems clear to me that it's not "this is how we do it" or "this is how you should do it" but rather "this posture/movement contains all of these potential qualities/directions/applications". see how in the clip i posted he does the taiji opening form normally, and then in the extrapolatory form his legs are wider and he squeezes his inner thighs together? that squeezing of the inner thighs is something which has taken me years to work out and he's showing that the feeling should be present even if it's not clearly visible in the standard forms. same goes for the rest. a posture isn't a posture, it's a whole bunch of stuff condensed into what looks from the outside like "a posture".

It is always fun to watch his moves and apps. in the clip, he used some examples or final postures from tai chi.

he was saying or proposing that we always have to think about apps for defense, hitting/striking, qin na and shuai or grappling and throws all the time from all postures.

for example

1. Peng, left forearm upward peng, and right hand around the waist.

This is the final posture, but we may use the same posture for defense, striking, grappling and throw. He showed these apps sequentially in the clip.

2. Lu or 2 hand lu downward posture or just double downward pushing palms or down ward sealing hand posture

again defense apps, strikes apps, grappling and throwing apps.

3. Ji posture

4. An posture or double pai zhang (tapping palm) or pa zhang (climb palm)

defense apps, strikes apps, grappling and throwing apps.

He called them 3 principles of MA

1. defense uses

2. strike uses

3. grappling and throwing uses.

I guess he just used them to illustrate his points.

;D

whoa, that taiji is trippy. totally robot/hiphop style! very interesting. his kua is closed too....

he loves thumbing his nose at the "orthodox" principles doesn't he? really inspires some thought here... gotta digest this stuff....

Yes.

I think he took the final posture and go from there to examplify his points.

Classical or orthodox Tai Ji would be;

1. we peng so that the opponent may not enter our front.

2. if the opponent peng, we then lu. or lu to neutralize peng.

3, if the opponent lu, we then ji,

4. if the opponent ji, we then an.

peng is in everything we do.

when we lu toward our left or right rear, there is some laterally outward (peng) power, too.

when we Ji, there is also some lateral outward (peng) power, too.

when we an, there are both forward (peng) and downward power, too.
