It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
On the one hand, the federal government could stop this at any time (Supremacy Clause), but on the other hand, some in government seem to like the tax revenue.
I am a States Rights guy myself, so if a state and its citizens want to legalize/decriminalize marijuana, I say let 'em...but again the Feds don't see it that way and could crack down at any time:

Btw, I think the thread title is a bit misleading, there are actually a lot of Democrats who are opposed to this, and you might be surprised by some of the well known conservatives who favor it.
It's not a left-right issue.

There are boatloads of "non-left/right" issues. Too bad left and right is all we're allowed.

Liberal doesn't mean Democrat. Some people misunderstand it that way. Republicans "were" the party of Lincoln. Democrats, especially Southern Christian Democrats were the models for "social" conservativism. Shucks, most Republicans (and Americans) favor many allegedly "liberal" ideas. The freedom to use marijuana is a "liberal" idea; maybe one could consider it a libertarian's view as well, but it's a belief (like God, btw) that doesn't belong to a political party.

Fair enough but liberals (not all Dems) have been fighting to legalize it since the sixties. Yes there Libertarians are no on board but I have yet to see a big move to legalize marijuana in the red states. Arkansas had a chance but they shot it down and most Red States are still giving people long sentences for it.

The fact is this all started with California. Had it started in Texas, I think you'd have a point, but as it stands the liberals are leading the way.

I don't even smoke but I think it's ridiculous that were lock people up for this and destroy their lives.

It's not ridiculous: it's profitable. It creates jobs.

Two typos in one sentence! Now that's embarrassing!

I posted a map above to explain my title.

I'm glad to hear that more and more conservatives are down with the cause.

I believe the war on drugs is big business and a way for the government to arrest and target hippies, minorities, the poor, medical patients, and the counter culture.

As I've said before, they used the War on Drugs to create the world's largest gulag archipelago in the freedom lovin' USA, and now they're clearing out some of the potsmokin' slave laborers in order to make room for people who break corporate laws, such as evil downloaders and other "enemy combatants." This is the transition. Max Keiser calls it the Casino Gulag.

Yes, many conservatives are in favor of it, and actually you may be surprised by who is in agreement with you on this issue:

Evangelist Pat Robertson says legalize marijuana: click

Ron Paul says end marijuana prohibition now: click

And you may be more surprised by some of the Democrats who are staunchly opposed to it!

I agree, which is why I said liberals and not Democrats. A lot of Dems are not liberal. But gay marriage and legal pot have been liberal causes for decades.

As far as the Dems as Bill Maher once famously said, "We have a great two party system, we have one party who wants is in Afganistan and another party who wants us in Afghanistan."

I wouldn't have too many issues with Ron Paul for president as long as it's not this guy...

And a great pretense to build the world's largest prison system, both inside and out. The numbers of people in USA prisons, and those under the control of the legal system, are so huge, approaching sth. like 8 million, that it is a devastating statistic for anyone who thinks the USA is a free country. It can not be characterized that way so generally, although blah, blah, blah, asterisk.
