OMG, I was totally weirded out by that movie. I only lasted about half an hour and left, all the time wondering who in the world it was intended for. So bizarre. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood, but I wanted to like it. Have to admit the thing I liked the most was Sparky (the mechanic) having a thick Aussie accent and all the time checking out Trixie. Maybe I'll have to get the DVD and try it again. Naaawwww.

Glad you got your money's worth. :)

it probably helped that speed racer was one of my favorite cartoons when i was a kid. plus the movie's visuals were reminiscent of really good psychedelics.

what's it about? doing speed and then racing while hallucinating?

that's sort of like the fast and furious franchise isn't it?

or is it blended with naruto is some freakish way and a dab of astro boy thrown in for good measure?

speed racer was an old japanese cartoon from the 60's or 70's (i watched it in the 70's), about a young lad who drove a race car (the mach 5) built by his family. he got into all sorts of adventures, usually hinged around competitive auto racing and his various and sundry rivals in the racing world. the cool thing for me was that the cars had all kinds of neat attachments: jacks that sprang from the bottom of the car to allow for cool jumps, wings, tire shredders that came out from the axles, etc.
the movie is more of the same, but the computer graphics and effects are pretty stunning.
critics will hate the movie, of course. it's by no means a cinematic tour de force.
