"Once, whlie practicing my Yiquan zhanzhuang I was approached by a frail, not so healthy-looking elderly gentlemen who told me, 'You're using too much force; you have to give up your force in order to develop more feeling and awareness. Then you will be able to control people with no force, with only your awareness.
Let me show you.'
"It turns out the old gentleman was General Zhang Xiangwu, a Yang family style Taiji Master form Taiwan,
who practiced the secret southern fighting form of 37 movements that originated with Yang Panhou, and which
was popularized in the U.S by the late Zheng Manqing.

This is a misunderstanding of Jan's part. Sifu and Dr. Chi "exchanged notes", and was never a teacher-student
I made several visits to Dr Chi over a four year period, staying with him in his house and taking one-to-one classes with him daily. I was privileged to practise partner work with Sam Tam, under Dr Chi’s supervision. Sam Tam is a highly regarded ‘I Chuan’ practitioner.

Sam's father was a doctor in the Chinese armed forces in the 1940's-50's and he arranged for Sam to receive instruction from high level military martial arts teachers including Lau Fat Mang (Eagle Claw), Han Xingyuan (Yiquan, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang), Yu Pengxi (Yiquan), Chang Dongshen (Shuaijiao), and Zhang Xiang Wu (Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang).

So the CMC (simplified?!?) 37 step originated with Yang Panhou and was the 'secret southern fighting form'.
maybe not so simple....
