This quote from Sam Tam in " The Tao of Yiquan" caught my attention

"Once, whlie practicing my Yiquan zhanzhuang I was approached by a frail, not so healthy-looking elderly gentlemen who told me, 'You're using too much force; you have to give up your force in order to develop more feeling and awareness. Then you will be able to control people with no force, with only your awareness.
Let me show you.'

"It turns out the old gentleman was General Zhang Xiangwu, a Yang family style Taiji Master form Taiwan,
who practiced the secret southern fighting form of 37 movements that originated with Yang Panhou, and which
was popularized in the U.S by the late Zheng Manqing.
Tao Of Yiquan pg 213

So the CMC (simplified?!?) 37 step originated with Yang Panhou and was the 'secret southern fighting form'.
maybe not so simple....

This is a misunderstanding of Jan's part. Sifu and Dr. Chi "exchanged notes", and was never a teacher-student relationship.

Sorry, not from Jan but a google search which yielded this result amongst many...

http://www.dakuai.co.uk/masters.html

I made several visits to Dr Chi over a four year period, staying with him in his house and taking one-to-one classes with him daily. I was privileged to practise partner work with Sam Tam, under Dr Chi’s supervision. Sam Tam is a highly regarded ‘I Chuan’ practitioner.

A conclusion I jumped to....
But I still am intrigued as to where GM Sam Tam learnt the CMC 37 step

Sam's father was a doctor in the Chinese armed forces in the 1940's-50's and he arranged for Sam to receive instruction from high level military martial arts teachers including Lau Fat Mang (Eagle Claw), Han Xingyuan (Yiquan, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang), Yu Pengxi (Yiquan), Chang Dongshen (Shuaijiao), and Zhang Xiang Wu (Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang).

so Zhang Xiang Wu

cognitive dissonance....

Yep, kind of ridiculous statement in my opinion

And also, how come Zhang Xiangwu was a "Taiji master from Taiwan"?
Unless we are talking about a different person, I recall Zhang left the Nationalist army and moved to Xi'an.
Later was arrested and sent for execution in Shandong

If Sam Tam's taijiquan teacher is the same as Omar's teacher's, Zhang Xiangwu, who was a student of one of Yang Luchan's students, I wonder why he made his own form instead of passing on the precious form he learned from his teacher.
I'm learning Sam Tam's material through his student, Torben Bremann, and it bums me out that I could have been learning some vintage Yang instead of yet another simplified interpretation.

So... Tam says that Zheng's 37 form was created by Yang Banhou and is secret. :o ...
-splat-

So, let's see if I got this right... despite of Zheng saying that he created a short version of YCF's form, he in fact learned a secret form created by Yang Banhou, whom he actually never had as a teacher or met. But somehow he learned it, despite it is secret. And then he claimed it was his own creation. And he taught it. But in fact, it is a secret...

???

Ok... :P

General Zhangxiang Wu was a formal student of Baji master Li Shuwen and was responsible (forced LOL) for Liu Yiu Yunqiao's acquistion of Yang style taiji, taiji sword and taiji dao - this particular general was never in Taiwan.

The reference must be to someone else with the same name
