Interesting development but not unexpected.
At this point if you were the president what would you do?

"Not unexpected" by whom, though? If it wasn't expected, ... never mind.

Afa what I would do, I think the most important thing is to ease relations between the Koreas. Then, I would ask that agreements be made between the Koreas and Japan. Personally, I wouldn't have tried to negotiate directly with Kim, anyway. That's what regional partners are for, i.e., the people Kim threatens directly.

Anyway, I think it is too complex to think that there's a simple solution. Kim got everything he wanted from the "summit." We got a vague promise for eventual denuclearization of the peninsula. Did that mean giving up missiles or just nuclear capable missiles? What about chemical and biological weapons? What is the time frame and who gets to check? Most of all, what happens if the agreement is not accepted, or Kim reneges, or it's found that Kim is building some other type of "wmd"?
Personally, though, those are the questions that I'd want to have answered before I congratulated myself on any agreement.

However, if the summit was just a way to agree on the basis of future meetings, that would be cool. That's often the way it works. But, it presumes that there are specific goals that can be verified. Those are what I'd have, at least. Oh, and I wouldn't say that everyone who came before me wasn't able to solve the problem.

As opposed to what?

Showing Kim a movie and accomplishing nothing?

This is what happens when you elect a reality TV star for the office of the president; everything he touches turns to crap and for all his blame on China all his campaign products are still made in China

Well, just last week, Kim said that NK won't give up its nukes unless the US demilitarizes first.

Waking up isn't the point. He says lots of things.

True, Trump is a symptom of something much worse happening in society.

Shucks. Judges have decided that what he tweets does not have to be "facts." Most people would say that facts have some relation to truth. But, nowadays, we know that there are "alternative facts" and that "truth is not truth." So, the result is that it's okay to lie. Unfortunately, the result is that whatever he tweets just can't be trusted. That's exactly what his own Justice Department (tm) wants.

"Speculation." "Unofficial information." "Political statements rather than assertions of pure fact."

Those are words federal judges have used to describe President Donald Trump’s tweets while guarding the secrecy of ongoing investigations that have shadowed his presidency.

And in an unusual twist, these rulings mark victories for Trump’s own Justice Department, which has argued repeatedly that the president’s comments on the probes are not always to be taken literally, or to be trusted.

In one tweet in March 2017, Trump claimed that the Obama administration tapped his phones as a candidate in Trump Tower. He insisted in May 2017 that he had the "absolute right" to meet with Russians in the Oval Office, even if critics worried he revealed state secrets. And he announced in June 2017 that he was under investigation for firing the FBI director.

Presidents don't tend to announce they are under investigation.

Trump's voluminous tweeting and other public statements offer regular insight into his thinking – and his disregard for the secrecy that traditionally surrounds national security issues.

But his administration has repeatedly, and successfully, urged federal judges to find that his comments are not reason enough to force the government to give up documents that would confirm whether what he is saying is true.

“Because the President’s tweet amounts to speculation, it does not” require agencies to acknowledge whether documents exist, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled in a case concerning whether Trump was under investigation.

"As already discussed, the President's statements may very well be based on media reports or his own personal knowledge, or could simply be viewed as political statements intended to counter media accounts about the Russia investigation, rather than assertions of pure fact," U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ruled in a case seeking release of the government synopsis of a dossier of information about Trump.

Those conclusions – that the president’s statements on national security are not always to be taken literally, or to be trusted – are legal victories for his Justice Department, which has argued repeatedly that the president’s public comments are no reason to force the government to divulge its national security secrets.

But, he'll come back saying it was the best deal ever made. I hope the two Koreas settle things between themselves. Then the South can tell the US that it's no longer needed, and they can tear down their wall. And then the wall between China and Korea can come down too. One day, even, the wall between China and RF can be removed. They have missiles, anyway.

Kim was educated in Switzerland so I believe he has more game than Trump but I hope Trump does accomplish something or at least get one thing right.

Interesting how the US is ready to take on Valenzuela and get involved in the flipping the government yet continues to separate and detain families coming from that part of the world who are also fleeing voilence, corruption and oppression.

Sorry Trump but one believes you. The only reason we are there is because Valenzuela has more oil than Saudi Arabia.

Interesting timing, isn't it? Trump meets with Kim the same time Cohen meets with Congress.

Afa Venezuela, it reminds me of Granada, except that there the excuse for invasion/intervention was to save American lives. Venezuela, the casual whipping boy, is suddenly someplace we're concerned about. Let's face it. The reasons "we're" doing it is because 1) political currency; it's easy to say that we're fighting for democracy and against socialism --though Maduro is essentially an autocratic dictator much like the leaders Trump respects most, 2) there's oil them there hills, and with it, economic opportunities. Venezuela donated oil to poor families in the US at the height of Chavez's socialism and afterward. https://readersupportednews.org/news-se ... households
3) Venezuela can't stop the US from doing whatever it wants.

Yeah, there'll be a lot of talk about concern for the conditions of the poor in Venezuela. But, it's bullshit, and the more sincere the pleas of people like Pence, et.c, the more we can smell it. Maduro should go, but it's not clear that Venezuelans will benefit from being a puppet state. It'd be naive to think so. Remember the troubles there were getting aid to Puerto Rico? Shucks. Doesn't anybody remember the effects of our intervention in the governments of central America (i.e, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador; i.e., Malatrucha Salvadorena, or MS13) and the emigration from those countries because of conditions there?

Frankly, I'd rather let China spend the money and gain the influence. And what about the rest of S. America? If the situation is really that bad, on a humanitarian level, then Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay are right there.
