I guess I would need to compare it with the Chinese original in order to judge if there is praise or merely a statement. Li was regarded as YCF's best and most gifted student so it would be somewhat odd to leave himself out describing his classmates different takes on fajin. He doesn't say that he is better than someone else and what he says about himself is very much the same as others said about him, that he was very hard to follow and released fajin suddenly without any notice.

The translator did no service to Lee sifu. Only about half of what Lee wrote is translated. Lee sifu actually sounded very humble. and said that because he didn't start early enough and that he was without much talent, his accomplishment was not very deep. There are other missing bits and info as well.

Thanks Richard, that is what I thought.

Can point me to where I can find the original text on the web or in print? :)

I have his book. It's too thick to scan, and my iPhone camera lens cover cracked so I can't take a good photo. (and I am a photographer, ugh).

I will try to get an image tomorrow.

Thanks a lot, Richardman!
What Bao and Trick suspected, a rather humble statement.
Modern practitioners are a riddle to me, some don't really read Chinese, think of self praising, others would understand similar statements of older masters about their worthlessness as lacking skills, while in fact they only were polite.
Language skills (modern/classical) and cultural immersion would help a lot, but to understand CMA, such seem unnecessary for many, lol!

My strong point is I can change fast. My opponent cannot predict my action. I always move fast with lighting speed and thunder power. I don't like to use slow skill such as sticky, follow, yield, ... I didn't study hard when I was young. I'm not a smart person. It's too bad that my ability has limitation.
