Yes! This is the core of old daoist Daoyin philosophy. Regulating your body by everything you do. Sleep, eat, sit, walk.
And everything you do can be incorporated into IMA practice as well.

I don't know enough about the art personally but I've heard more than one martial artist recommend pilates as a good supplementary exercise system for IMA

Supplementary activities for Tai chi?

Well I think most people would be better off looking more like Chen Fake rather than Yang cheng Fu or Wang Shu Jin ... So, some understanding of nutrition and a bit something that stresses the cardiovascular system a few times a week. ;)

Seated meditation.
Both of my Tai-chi Chuan instructors emphasized its importance.

My personal feeling is that seated meditation/still sitting is not needed if doing TJQ. But I was advised by an Tongbeiquan/tanglangquan Oldtimer to do it if purely doing such an martial arts, but said nothing about sitting on a YinYang sheet 8-)

Years ago, Japanese researchers discovered that sumo wrestlers were at a higher risk for diabetes and hypertension than the Japanese general population. This risk continues today, making sumo wrestling one sport that could be considered unhealthy.

Shocker hahaha

Sumo wrestlers have a much shorter life expectancy, too. As a result, most diet heavily upon retirement, becoming very mundane-looking after - despite heading a sumo stable or the like usually afterwards.

Interestingly foreign-descent sumo wrestlers seem to have less success with the dieting, often staying in the same sumo shape after retirement instead.
