Steve James wrote:Aw, mockery is often just the expression of repressed envy. They don't ridicule her because of her age. It's because she's been so successful at getting her message across. A high schooler might call her out for being short or for having bad hair.

Someone else comes to a similar conclusion, but she thinks shame is the motivation. She's a 16 year-old with Asperger's whose sailed on a yacht across the Atlantic to speak at the UN. What could she know? :)

But she's not just a girl with Asperger's. She's a Swedish girl with Asperger's.

In lots of ways, we quite like the Swedes. We like their noir novels and their flat-pack furniture. Their ABBA, their Lykke Li. Their cosy cocoa-and-cake culture. And we often find appeal in much of their public policy. Appeal right up until the point where we have to ponder paying for it. Then, abruptly, Sweden is slammed as a socialist dystopia.

When a girl from Sweden tells the world all the ways that they are failing the planet, all the toil we're neglecting to do for the earth, she's dismissed as a meddler.

She's a person — and not just a person, but a mere girl — who's looking down at us, who's judging us.

If we can work out ways to disregard her — to use her age and accent and Asperger's against her — then her scowling and judgment doesn't matter. In considering the source as less than, we can rationalise not paying proper attention. After all, the judgment of our inferiors matters little.

But she's not just a girl, with Asperger's, who's Swedish. For the kicker, she's a girl, with Asperger's, who's Swedish and who's asking us to do more than just separate our rubbish. And this is what it's really about. The pigtails and soft voice takes a backseat to the true problem with Greta Thunberg: she reminds us of the litany of our collective failings.

Not just about how we don't care enough, but that we're not doing enough. That we're not outspoken enough. That we're not sacrificing.
That even if we acknowledge that there's a climate calamity, we're not forgoing anything for it.

Just as we hate vegans because they remind us that there's a dark cost — paid by animals every bit as sentient as our fawned-over puppies — to that burger, Greta is the ghost of a very dismal Christmas future.

It's equal parts predictable and reprehensible that a girl gets targeted because she's saying and doing what we're too — variously — lazy, complacent and greedy to do ourselves.

But the reasons she bristles, the reasons that a soft-spoken 16-year-old Swede has the capacity to stir such defensiveness and prompt such venom, is testimony to the fact that she's doing an awful lot right.

Since this is currently a bit of a Greta fanboy fest (count me in, please), and also since this text describes and analyzes the ad hominen attacks quite nicely, I’d like to address one thing you wrote about her here, Michael. You describe her as “mentally disabled”. That in itself is certainly incorrect. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you mixed up "mentally disabled" with "mentally ill". Anyway, mental illness or disorder is something of a gray area in general, so a few observations on that.

Greta Thunberg’s mental disorders have been reliably documented as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, selective mutism and of course Asperger (i.e. a relatively mild or quite mild form of autism). To deal with them in this order:

- OCD is a behavioural disorder whereby a sufferer feels compelled to repeat certain actions or to think a great deal or constantly about certain things. Often/arguably as an attempt to manage other emotional or life issues. In a severe form it can be very debilitating for leading any kind of ‘normal’ life, in a milder form it can be a bummer but it can be managed and indeed often mitigated. It has nothing to do with and does not negatively affect mental acuity or a sense of reality. In other words, it has absolutely nothing to do with being stupid, or delusional.

- Depression is a disorder that can present from fairly mild to extremely severe. In its most severe forms and during corresponding episodes it can affect cognition (i.e. make you a bit more ‘stupid’) or lead to delusions. Or make it almost literally impossible to get out of bed, for instance. But depression is usually not so severe – then you can feel shitty, really unhappy, senseless, sometimes lack motivation, maybe even have suicidal thoughts or in worse cases put these into practice. But here too, in most cases it has nothing to do with being stupid or indeed delusional in any clinical sense. I have had several episodes of depression in my life, ranging from mild to moderately severe, and the most recent one just a couple of years ago. During which I kept on functioning pretty well as a translator, martial arts teacher, bodyworker, life partner and father. Even posted on RSF a few times without going all delirious or mega doom-gloom. Or hopefully too embarassing :)

- Selective mutism means choosing simply not to say anything to certain people or in certain situations. It is more of a symptom of other things (can be various reasons) and not a disorder in itself. It’s often not a socially amenable trait but it doesn’t mean you’re stupid or in any other way ‘crazy’.

- And then we have, famously, Asperger. Or a disorder at the mild end of the ‘autism’ spectrum. Too much to usefully summarize here but 3 minutes on Wikipedia will do it well enough. Asperger itself can have various degrees of severity, and Greta Thunberg quite obviously doesn’t have this in a severe form. And this disorder too does not, it itself, imply any lower levels of cognition (in some respects quite the opposite) or any delusional traits. Nothing like schizophrenia, in other words. Here is a short list of historical persons who, on the basis of their recorded/described personalities, can credibly be suspected of having Asperger, or of being at the mild end of the autism spectrum:
Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Paul Dirac, Nikola Tesla and W.A. Mozart. And one who is still with us and quite possibly fits the profile: Bill Gates.
I have selected them from a larger list because – with the exception of Mozart, which I just couldn’t resist – they all seem to have been reasonably good at scientific, logical stuff and at thinking issues through to the end. They were all a bit weird sometimes, often not too good at personal relationships, small talk, being charming and so on, but they weren’t stupid or, at least when it came to science, delusional. If you would now feel inclined to write off the work, achievements, statements etc. of these persons and dismiss them and their contributions because they were “mentally ill” - or indeed "mentally disabled" if you really did mean that with respect to Greta Thunberg - then go ahead. It's a free world :).

Oh yes, and since this thread is actually supposed to be full of humor and I'm coming on all dour and unhumorous again (sorry), here's a joke:

A. Only one. But the light bulb must really want to change.

It is funny how the children are acting like leaders and the leaders are acting like children. Compare the way they respond to Greta with the way she responds to to them. Compare their UN speeches.

On another note, how funny would it be to ridicule Baron Trump? And, if it's been done already, what's wrong with some more?

@ Giles, yeah I meant mentally ill. Not disabled. Not handicapped. Not feeble minded. Not cuckoo. Not bonkers. Not loony. Just mentally ill. That's what I meant.

You gotta hand it to Trudeau, he really goes all the way with his acting. He even colored his tongue.

It's politically humorous that lefties demand un-personing for blackface, except when done by lefties.

Why did the Toronto Star just remove a high-quality Trudeau blackface video?

First incident was high school.

Video was after high school.

Arabian knight costume as a teacher was the third incident.

I would say 16 years old is a young adult, not a child.
28 States in the US have a minimum age of marriage of 16 years or younger.
