THE MARTIAL MAN
Nov 1, 2019

In this episode, I visit Master Yap Boh Heong and Sifu Ben Shue in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to discuss the rare and unknown Kung-fu style of the legendary Kung-fu empress Wumei (Ng Mui in Cantonese.)

According to oral history, legend has it that Wumei took refuge in the Southern Shaolin temple, where she later founded several styles of Kung-fu. It was there that she met 'Yim Wing Chun,' a young lady who was threatened by a local bandit attempting to force her into marriage. She was saved by Wumei, who distilled her profound knowledge of Shaolin Kung-fu into a system that Yim Wing Chun could learn quickly and use to fight off the bandit. The martial art Yim Wing Chun learned was given the name Wing Chun.

Very cool. I've always maintained that at advanved levels, southern arts can be just as soft and internal as XY/BG/TJ. He is living proof of it.

His method also reminds me of Chu Songting's WC in terms of power generation, but with a more subtle touch.

IMO, the Taiwanese practitioner's Taizu is a "Taizu combination style" with elements of other southern styles mixed it. (Taiwan was once -- and to some extend still is -- a treasure trove of eclectic southern styles due to the large influx of southern boxers who immigrated to Taiwan after the fall of Ming Dynasty with Zheng Chenggung's army. Many of them compared notes and came up with new systems/styles that do not exist in China.)

The use of the "arm blade" to slash, chop, and pierce as demonstrated by the Malaysian Master is considered a characteristic of orthodox Taizu, which is also found in Taiwan. Here's an example:
