The 连步拳 Lian Bu Chuan is a very interested form. You can repeat it over and over, you won't feel tire. The form was designed in such a way that it always make your body to feel comfortable. Besides the XingYi form, I have not seen any other forms like this.

Watching TV or lifting a half pound weight "always make your body to feel comfortable and won't make you feel tire." To answer the OP question "Train partial form for 'health,'" lower intensity (lower heart rate) activity does not "replace running 3 miles, have the same result or have the same health benefit." There are more efficient ways to train for "health."

Repeated posture training is always good as it counteracts muscle atrophy so even simple walking is a great start!
I still do my changquan form(s) that I remember or add postures that I can remember. NO doubt there is a health aspect when dome for x period of time to burn excess body fat and warm body with the activity.

Yes. But, the OP did not include "x period of time" and my question went unanswered. However normally, a half hour of form/walking does not replace, have the same result or have the same "health" benefit as a half hour of running. My comment was also based on the description given of the form ("won't feel tire" and "always feel comfortable").

Yes. Tai chi can also be good for health. However, the health benefits (e.g., physiological adaptations, VO2 max, HRV) from different intensities of exercises (e.g., Zhan Zhuang, LSD, HIIT) are not "the same."

I don't run fast any more. my running speed for 3 miles is 45 minutes. Sometime I run 4 miles for 1 hour.

To feel comfortable is vey important for me. If I don't feel comfortable and feel exhausted instead, I won't keep doing it. I'm no longer in "development" mode. I'm in "maintenance" mode right now.

John have you ever done your taiji form in slow mode before?
like 20-45 minutes for one form?

I know the chang taiji -- people like to do it fast for application

just curious if you ever explored this as a "fitness" training

when my teacher trained with chu guiting --
he told me the taiji training was the most demanding physically
but our form takes 45 minutes to go through --
and do the form 1x is only good for health -- if you want to develop the kungfu -- it should be 3x in a row... (about 2 hours)

I have tried the Taiji form too. But I don't like the slow motion, it takes too much time to make my heart to beat fast. I need more challenge than just the slow Taiji movement.

I did 100 reps on this drill yesterday. This is the kind speed that I like to maintain.

well you got to find what works best for you

the piercing palm drill is a good one
its called sparrow hawk enters the forest (or something like that..)
its from gong ting bagua --

when you use the step like he shows in the video
there is no momentum involved
you should be able to stop on a dime
and also change the direction on a dime

you can also do it with a body flip/turnover
usually you do 3 pierces and the the fanshen (flip/turnover the body) movement

Here is another fast footwork drill that I like to do. Speed makes me feel good.

That looks very similar to some of the circular drills that I do. I have whittled my system down to four circular drills and four linear drills. Nothing feels better than training the sabre drills, though - especially those with Baguazhang footwork. It really works out the core. So tiring, but so satisfying. Like good sex. :D

All of xylh "forms" are flowing regular 1-2 moves. Great for "health" and power which goes into "shadow" routines.

Solo routines are good for sports/fight specific training but also get a health benefit (not as much as xylh because they don't flow).

Started with the most basic:

head cover, 1-2, rear kick

Now have sets of routines broken across different areas of training that compound on prior sets with 10-20 moves to choose from in each set:

1. Basics
2. Blocks & deflection
3. Bring & range
4. Angled, side to side
5. Infighting

Also added routine collections with 5 sets each with 10-20 moves covering:

Parries, evasion & control
Shoots, takedowns, throws
Combos, speed and power

Helped me a lot to be able to adapt in sparring and tournaments plus has helped with cardio to do more rounds than I was used to.
