They're also releasing some really sweet extended versions of old films, but not much original is on the horizon.

And that's the key really - repeating old is how one makes money in the entertainment business. New is too risky. DC/Marvel, Star Wars, etc. - just that much easier to make money (which it is all about).

"New is too risky." Yep!
But Great Original Movies (Art) Comes from high Risk.

Low low Risk is how present day Studios have decided to make money in the entertainment business.
The Filmmakers that made the entertainment so appealing to audiences made different choices

In the old days the entertainment business was ran mostly by a highly creative person who had some business sense. It was a delicate mix of art and some business sense. (Louis B. Mayer MGM, Lillian Gish Mary Pickford, founder of the Pickford–Fairbanks Studios, Charlie Chaplin, etc)

The Film business use to be known as “Show Business.” Now it’s just called “The Business.”
This trend started some years ago when the balance between business and Creatives changed.
Big Business (companies like General Electric (GE) bought entertainment companies like NBC, etc.) bought out Creatives and started selling products the way car companies sell cars.

The thought is, "What’s not advertised will not be bought."

Basically, just say the name of what you're selling over and over and people will buy it.
But to make great original art comes from Failure; Failure after failure until you get it right.
“Real Filmmakers are prepared to fall on their face. They are prepared to fall on their face over and over again. They are prepared to fail until they until they don’t.”

They truly invest in loss.

That workflow is way too risky for Big Business. They just want to make money. Fuck Art.
So with Big Business in control of studios, that’s what they pushed on the creative Stars and Filmmakers.

True Creatives are Mavericks (Marlon Brando, Eddie Murphy) that work on the edge and can be oddly difficult people that are notoriously hard for anyone to control: they are dedicated to Great Art only.
Fuck Big Business & their car salesmen tactics.

So what’s Big Business to do? They’re the owners!

Well, you just pick any less talented young actor or director then start promoting those less talented Actors and Directors (or models, or Rappers, or Family member, girlfriends, etc.)
And just say their names (what/who they’re) selling over and over and people think "Oh, he must be a talented star to be in so many films. Let’s go see their movies."

It's like hearing a song that’s not bad. It’s sorta okay. But, it’s a song you wouldn’t play again. Then after hearing the sorta okay song over and over, day after day, until you start singing it.

The Creatives are still out there. They’re just not invested in.
So, they're songs are just not played.

Yep.

A movie's success depends on various factors, like:
- Creativity (but this is risky)
- Special Effects
- Brand/name actors
- Advertising (just like politics!)

It's all about investment - just look at the top 10 movies of 2019:
Avengers Endgame, Lion King, Frozen II, Spiderman Far From Home, Captain Marvel, Joker, Star Wars The Rise of Starwalker, Toy Story 4, Aladdin, Jumanji The Next Level.

Not much more to say about that really, but - great for the investors who made lots of money! (They could care less about the creatives, which are just a drop in the bucket in comparison really.)

Can a movie define the times any better?
