Fight Commentary Breakdowns
May 17, 2020

This happened May 17, 2020, and it involved self-proclaimed Tai Chi Master Ma Bao Guo 马保国 and an MMA hobbyist. For those of you who've been following Chinese MMA news, this is the same Ma Bao Guo Tai Chi master that ran away from the Xu Xiaodong match in 2017. Three years later, Ma Baoguo tests his Tai Chi and Xingyi against a 50-year-old MMA hobbyist in an official match put on by Yan Wu Tang 16 fight promotion in Shandong. The match was not in a ring or a cage, but on what looks like the ground. Jerry and Rob cover the fight and also share with you the thoughts of Andy Pi, the father of BJJ and MMA in China. Let us know what you think about this. Should these matches keep going? Should these fight promoters be locked up? Do we need to be a little more cautious about putting on these matches?

The Chinese have absolutely ruined kungfu. They keep promoting losers like this guy Ma and have been now for over 50 years. They have all these slick videos on Youtube as soft power propaganda then when you put one of the "masters" in a ring, he doesn't even have basic fitness or skills.

Look at how Ma moves. He shuffles his feet like he's right out of a retirement home. He clearly has ZERO basic training. The other guy is old too and he's wearing boxing gloves, meaning his punches are easier to see and block. Ma had YEARS to prepare for this. Xu Xiaodong might have killed him with one punch. Good thing that fight never took place. TCMA hasn't moved a millimeter since the famous Hong Kong Wu taichi vs. white crane debacle.
Time to put the QUAN back in taijiQUAN. Time to put the YANG back in YANG style taiji.

I assume Ma has more than basic training in taiji and xingyi. But where is his balance, relaxation, handle energy, etc.? I like the way the MMAist uses his jab, leaves it out and traps Ma's arms while punching him in the face. Hard lesson.

Agree Dave - it's all very tragic. Especially for an old man of 69 getting knocked out like that. He could easily have died. Had a stroke or something. The whole thing is folly. I'm 100% convinced he won't learn anything from this either and will come up with a list of excuses for why he lost.

I think (perhaps) there are some inaccuracies in this video:

1) All other videos of this fight call the challenger an amateur San Da guy, not an 'MMA guy' - his outfit and gloves would make me believe that is the case.

2) The commentators seem to think Ma is a "Xin Yi" fighter beause of the name of his art, however it's a type of Chen style Tai Chi with influences from Xin Yi, not really Xing Yi or Xin Yi.

3) The official Chen Style Xinyi Hunyuan Taijiquan people (Abbreviated as Hunyuan Taiji 陈式心意混元太极拳,简称混元太极拳) have declared that Ma is a fake, and not associated with them:

Hunyuan Taiji Statement about Ma Baoguo

We hereby solemnly declare, our school is in no way or shape related to the Ma Baoguo who was KOed in 40 seconds today (May 17, 2020).
Chen Style Xinyi Hunyuan Taijiquan (Abbreviated as Hunyuan Taiji 陈式心意混元太极拳,简称混元太极拳) was founded by the late Grandmaster Feng Zhiqiang, with its aim as a health exercise for human health. It is an excellent cultural heritage. To date, it has a history of close to one hundred years.
Ma Baoguo has violated our trademark ™ name to call his style Hunyuan Xingyi Taiji Gate (浑元形意太极门) and has repeatedly tarnished our reputation. My grandfather’s disciples have on many occasions launched lawsuit against him. Further, the Hunyuan Taiji Wushu Development Center and the Hunyuan Taiji Professional Committee under the Beijing Martial Arts Association reserve the right to take legal actions against those social media which continue to associate us with such frauds.

While I enjoy a fraud getting punked out as much as the next guy, when I saw Ma hit the ground I was very concerned for his safety. As has already been pointed out, he could have very easily been killed. It's a good thing he ran away from Xu Xiaodong.

I'm almost two decades younger than Ma and on the rare occasion I take a shot to the head these days it screws me up for a good week.

I cannot imagine what something like this does to an old man.

I felt sorry for him until seeing this video. He had it coming with this bullshit. I only move like that when getting attacked by a swarm of bees.

I hope he's NOT alright. He needs to be sued for fraud, just like all of these losers. I mentioned the possible fight with Xu Xiao-dong because if Xu hit one of these frauds and killed him, then Xu's entire life would be ruined. i care more about Xu than Ma.

What always gets me about these massacres is how little discussion in the kungfu community results from them. How many of these losers have had their asses handed to them in the most embarassing way? Remember the wing chun loser that couldn't even stand up to a one-armed boxer? The whole IMA paradigm is clearly bankrupt and broken beyond repair but so-called "masters" getting their asses handed to them every single time doesn't result in even 1% introspection by the kungfu crowd. Look at the discussion under the video above and it's 50x any discussion on the kungfu side. All people ever talk about in kungfu is master this, useless lineage that, worthless theoretical nonsense this, useless form that. People are wasting 20-30 years of their lives learning nothing and no one on in kungfu bats an eyelash.

But discussing these events in some hope that it will make anything great again will get it great again? .....Now I’m not one of those because I’m not a fighter, but why doesn’t those Kungfu guys that angrily complaining the fraudulent masters performance themselves step up to make Kungfu great again ?

If by "fighter" you mean competitor, dont really feel its necessary as long as one understands
that competition often brings one's practice to another level that some in the clips for example
may not have appreciated.

The other way which most here have probably done in gaining functionality
of their practice is though interactions "sparring" with as many stylist as they can outside
of their own practice. Still keeping in mind its not at the same level for the most part
as competitive events.

Those in the clips never really seem to have gained this aspect outside of their own practices.

Don't feel those in the clips are "frauds" as some have suggested,,maybe missguided
hopefully their experience will force them to reflect on their practice understanding the what and why.

The thing I find interesting is how people who claim to train internal arts take great joy in others who claim to train internal arts getting a hiding
It says a lot about those that post these clips
Why do they do it
I look at someone getting beaten and it has little to do with me or my training
I never see these people wanting to fill the gap and take up arms
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

You’ll have to speak up a bit Wayne - I can’t hear you from up there on that moral high ground you’re always putting yourself on.
