what is Internal Martial Art

The following typical threads that plague martial arts sites will get moved here if not just deleted: 1 - My style is better than Your style" - 2 - "Internal & External" - 3 - Personal attacks - 4 - Threads that start well, but degenerate into a spiral of nonsense.

"you know...if they're external, your movement is big, clumsy, hard, stiff...."

Yeah, i'm saying I disagree!

SMH...wrong...internal and external are both of the same coin. CMA is beautiful hard or soft...with proper power, structure and connected body language.

Even though this is something that has been revisited again and again here, it's a very worthy topic. Especially as people who aren't fighters or competitors began to take over the discourse on internal strength/power which opened the door for people who didn't even do CMA to claim that they, alone, had internal power.

Yeah your're correct Ian...

It just irks me so much...the general (mistaken) idea that External movements are: "big, clumsy, hard, stiff..." It's an over generalization, that is far from true.

Hey, your contributions are part of the ongoing discourse and need to be a part of it. From what I have seen, your taijiquan is very nice.

Wait...within the first minute Paul says what you are saying. I think you both agree. :)

He gives no definition on internal. What does he mean with internal? Internal nonsense? The whole discussion becomes nonsensical because he gives no definition or explain what he means.

The missing word at the end is "shortsighted." He's talking about the formation of Guoshu "national arts" in the 1920/30s-ish.

I think they've been fighting ever since ;D

Book by Ben Judkins - it's really good.

The wind was flapping the temple flag and two monks started an argument. One said the flag moved, the other said the wind moved. They argued back and forth but could not reach a conclusion. The Sixth Patriarch said, “It is not the wind that moves, it is not the flag that moves, it is your honourable minds that move.” The monks were awe-struck.

The soft becomes hard
The hard soft
It is the practicioners who dictates if it is internal or external
That doesn't mean there is not a unique Shen fa for both arts and that if you do the Shen fa of the other you have left one domain and enter the other
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

He sounds like an internal martial artist. When asked a question receive a response that lasts for 5 minutes but doesn't answer the question.

The difference is in the training practices.

An internal martial artist is a martial artists that focuses training more on the internal side of training practices. I'm guessing everyone here knows the distinction & can list them out.
