I didn't think the 80s movie was bad, just dull. I liked many parts. Sting's character, for ex., and Capt Picard was cool.
Anyway, I think it's possible today to do more things with technology. I don't think any movie can live up to the imagination.

"Total Recall" was inspired by a Phillip K Dick short story "We can remember it for you wholesale" that honestly had very little in common with either film adaptation beyond the memory recovery/replacement involving mars.
I'm excited for Dune, it looks like it's going to be pretty and expensive with a talented cast, so should be a delight.
