Yes, it's basic stuff, simple stuff. Nothing wrong with that. IMO, and from a point of view of teaching beginners - to be able to use things that actually works, it's often better to start off by drilling practical, simple things with a partner. And when you feel comfortable with them, you can build more advanced methods on top of it, or develop them further. If you try to grasp everything at once, you'll often start and end with nothing.
That is what I see all too often, teachers that just show off their "advanced" stuff to beginners and teachers that are trying to teach too advanced techniques too early, things that just won't work if the students first have an understanding of timing, distance and angle, as well as have a basic understanding of entering and defending.
