Practical Bagua & Xingyi

Postby Bao on Sun Feb 21, 2021 2:04 am

Just start by taking a look at the first few minutes. Thought this was a pretty good demonstration on how basic movements can be applied in a real fighting situation. Small, simple, not signalling, practical.

In Chinese but you really understand everything just by watching.

What do you think?

His stepping seems legit. I just wrote something about stepping and Xing Yi on my blog.

Yeh I don't mind these guys. The applications align with how I've been taught to apply it. It's also nice to see some people who show the traditional method and are yet still young and fit enough to have a bit of liveliness behind it. Most of the teachers I've met in China who can show applications in this manner are usually in their 60s or older and not really sparring much any more.

I like his stuff in general and this video in particular as well - the concepts he shows really chime with how I was taught xingyi (affecting opponent's structure on contact, changing direction of power, importance of vertical / horizontal spirals of force, etc), and he is one of the few young teachers who can actually show how that works in practice.

O K but they don't understand spiral energy to enter and control
Just wack in with blunt energy
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

I like that he uses the movements compact in a compact together with use of angles. But sure, you are right that he doesn’t use twisting or spiraling to stick and control. Yeah, I miss some of that. But I would believe that his perspective is from general sparring and sanda. So he probably adapts his things to use his stuff in that kind of setting, common sparring and Sanda including with the possibility to use the techniques wearing gloves.

Thanks. If I got the right search then yes I’ve seen some of these guys before, it’s basic stuff, same as learned early on in Aikido and other Japanese”Jujutsu” methods as example......(which mean it’s good 8-) )
However im kind of with Wayne’s observation here too(if it’s the same vids I found)

Yes, it's basic stuff, simple stuff. Nothing wrong with that. IMO, and from a point of view of teaching beginners - to be able to use things that actually works, it's often better to start off by drilling practical, simple things with a partner. And when you feel comfortable with them, you can build more advanced methods on top of it, or develop them further. If you try to grasp everything at once, you'll often start and end with nothing.

That is what I see all too often, teachers that just show off their "advanced" stuff to beginners and teachers that are trying to teach too advanced techniques too early, things that just won't work if the students first have an understanding of timing, distance and angle, as well as have a basic understanding of entering and defending.

If I could only practice one thing each day it would be
Raise drill drop and unfoil
It is a thing most people neglect in Hsing I in the quest for power
Not only is it the seat of all internal power
It is the secret to change and control
Small movement is good but it must contain more Hsing I not less

Three levels
Obvious
Refined
Unexplainable

If it is not taught at the start it won't be there in the end
Don't put power into the form let it naturally arise from the form

Notice how they look a bit stronger like they actually train. I like how they are going through a process of exploring and finding ways to apply the art. That's a good thing.

Wayne you are talking about Pi Chuan (Metal form) correct ? Would you care to elaborate a bit more.
