I once had a roommate who was also into kung fu. The house we rented was across the street from not exactly a crack house, but definitely the sort of house where one might start to look for a crack house if you wanted to find one. At any rate, we kept getting neighbors over who wanted to borrow our phone to call a taxi, and other sorts of nonsense. So one afternoon we went out in the front yard and started sparring with a 3-section-staff and a spear.

Oddly enough, no one ever wanted to use our phone any more, after that.

The three section staff is great for teaching a felt sense of angular momentum and how to feel where it's safe to stand relative to moving objects/bodies. For a long period of time, anyone learning it seems to be at least as much a danger to themselves as they are to others.

At the beginning when you learn a 3 sectional staff and/or chain whip wear a football helmet - you'll avoid some of the self inflicted mishaps

There is an old video of a Japanese koryu demonstration where teh head of a system brains his daughter with a three secitiojn staff - so rare in JMA terms it is the one and only time I've seen it - she starts bleeding down her forehead but staunchly braves on. like some other flexible weapon they can bite if one is not carful

Nah, just take the pain-- that's how you learn to move out of the way!

Since I had some friends that were interested in learning, what I ended up doing was making a couple out of dowels, chain, and eye screws from the local hardware store. The end dowels were slightly smaller diameter and I glued pipe insulation on them to make them padded. Obviously not suitable for contact, but good for learning the basic spins. I think some of the wushu guys use ones made from bamboo or rattan, which would hurt quite a bit less than the hardwood ones I learned on.
