Pushing hands, in BJJ

Postby GrahamB on Fri May 13, 2022 3:19 am

I like those little moments when arts crossover - here's pushing hands, done in BJJ against the legs:

He puts his face deliciously close to (right in front of) the guy's feet...

So what makes you say it's push hands as opposed to just bridging to enter like in every CMA

Well, it's not, literally, push hands. If you want to be utterly pedantic, (and this is the Internet, and RSF, so why not) I would say it's "using some of the skills and jins trained in push hands in another art." That's just not as catchy, is it?

Sticking, following, listening, neutralising.

Okay but like, in that situation, why would you fuck around with that nonsense? Why not just kick them in the taint with everything you've got?

Okay but like why do push hands anyway? It's the most pointless thing ever invented. You're close enough to kick the guy in the balls. At that point ,why not just kick him in the balls?

Just using your logic back at you.

Well push hands has a point, right? Learning to control an opponents center of gravity and movement.

What's the point of this other than to get into a artificial combat situation that is only applicable within the context of a particular set of sporting rules.

Sport BJJ is the only context where flopping on your back and presenting your groin to be stomped is an effective tactic.

Which is not to say I don't respect BJJ as an art, it's awesome.

But training for a context that encourages that kind of stupidity just seems like a poor use of that art.

You don't see that in Vale Tudo.

OK, I'm out. This conversation is too mentally painful to be in. It's like you're looking at a basketball game and going "this is dumb, I would just pick the ball up and run". :-\

* Makes mental note: don't post bjj clips on rsf again.

Exactly; that was my point as well.

However, like you said, this is "sport BJJ" -- not a street fight, nor training for one. This is kind of like training for a PH competition... Both can be a lot of fun, and contribute, in some way, to one's ability to defend themselves.

There's plenty of room under the sun for it all...

I mean yeah, it's a game and you're training to play the game and the game and that's fine as long as you know it's just the game and not "combat" any more than, as you said, basketball.

But what's the point of the art? To play a game? I mean great if that's what you're training, to but if you're training for legitimate self defense and your opening gambit that has won you tournaments is flopping on your back and presenting your groin, maybe you won't realize that's a bad idea in the wild.

I don't see how anyone training for no holds barred self defense would waste time in this particular fight scenario because, again, it's only relevant in the context of sport BJJ and I could give a fuck about a game.

The Taijiquan answer to the situation isn't playing patty cake with his feet, it's a Master Ken groin stomp. Knee drop to the chest, boot to the head.

If you flop onto your back and stick your ass up to get stomped you are not a threat to anyone UNLESS they want to play that game and try to establish a mount. Free movement with feet deployed is a superior position to mount.

Again why train a bad habit with limited use case? You getting paid to promote a gym by winning tournaments?
