In "Inbox", you mark the ones you want to delete, and go down below where it says "mark/unmark as important." When you click it, you'll get a scroll-list where you can chose "delete", and then you click "go" to delete.
However, if you want to keep messages there's another option. In "Rules folders and settings", you can create a new folder where you can store old messages. When you have created a new folder, you will have a new option when you click "mark/unmark as important," as above in the inbox, that says "move to [xxx]". And then again, just click "go" to confirm. So if you want to save old messages, you can just move them to a new folder.
You can create up to 4 new folders, and together with the inbox, you can save up to 500 messages.
