Horror survival video games

Postby Jake on Wed Jun 04, 2008 5:28 pm

Mr Jose's post about horror movies got me to thinking...

What's the scariest video game you've ever played?

I haven't played a video game but once in the last 4 years and I'm thinking of buying an xbox or a ps3.

4 years ago I had a ps2 and I played Silent Hill 2. Scared me good. I remember playing it with the lights down and being so engrossed in it it literaly gave me goose bumps! I also played Fatal Frame, Clocktower, and some others. The Resident Evil games were one of them.... But I didn't like the controls so I never got into it.

What games have scared the shit out of you so I'll know which ones to get. :)

Thanks.

I haven't actually played any seriously yet.

but there was this sanitarium level in Thief 2 that blew my fucking mind. I was scared shitless through most of it--it was so creepy.

Well...if u have an xbox, get your hands on Call Of The Cthulhu: Dark corners of the earth. Great atmosphere, if youre a lovecraft fan. The control also vibrates to mimmick the character's heartbeat. It quickens and he sees blury when something happens and it gets you pretty damn nervous as well.

Resident Evil 2

The licker jumping through the glass at the police station. Nuff said.

there were a few things in half-life when it first came out about 8 years ago that made me jump because it was so 'sudden'. :-[

I mostly just play PC games

Well, it's not horror, but X-COM: UFO Defense got me scared at night when I was playing it and I had to do night missions against Chrysalids.

Alone in the Dark I was pretty scary as well.

And while not truly horror, Half-Life 2's Ravenholm level is very creepy and can make you jump as well when you first meet the fast zombies.

I also have F.E.A.R. home, but didn't play it yet. I heard that it is scary and creepy as well.

Cutting those zombies in half with the gravity gun activated saw blades was really satisfying. Setting them on fire was really creepy. I often shot them down just to make them stop crying. After a while I got used to it and saved my ammunitions.

I don't know if you played Episode 1 and Episode 2, but in Episode I the stalkers from the Razor train are EXTREMELY creepy. There's also a level where you fight zombies in a dark mine. Another favorite one, was fighting a Strider in an abandoned building. That one reminded me of the War of the Worlds, especially when you made a noise on the lower levels and the Strider would crouch down to check it out.

From Episode 2, fighting the Hunters for the first time is pretty intense. It is quite emotionally charged, considering what they did earlier in the game. Other ugly baddies are the Zombines and especially the Combine Advisors.

The first Silent Hill creeped me out good. I couldn't even finish the game because it was giving me nightmares. I ended up selling it back to our local video game shop.

Felipe, Resident Evil 2 was awesome. That Licker made me jump too.
